President Dissanayake Calls for Effective Disaster Management at Deputy Defence Minister’s Ceremony
On November 25, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake participated in the ceremony where Deputy Minister of Defence Mr. Aruna Jayasekara officially assumed his duties in his new role.
During his address, President Dissanayake emphasized that merely strengthening institutional structures for disaster management is insufficient. He stressed the importance of creating mechanisms that deliver solutions effectively to the grassroots level.
He highlighted that irregular human activities are a significant cause of natural disasters, and while laws exist to address these issues, they are often not implemented properly. The President assured support for officers who enforce these laws appropriately and reiterated the necessity of practical solutions to prevent disasters in vulnerable areas. He underlined the role of empowering and strengthening local government institutions in these efforts.
Encouraging government employees to propose enhancements to the legal framework for disaster management, the President pointed out that proper enforcement of existing laws could significantly reduce government expenditure on disaster management.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sampath Thuyacontha, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General H.L.V.M. Liyanage, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, and other distinguished guests.
