Yesterday (05), President Anura Kumara Dissanayake officially assumed duties as the Minister of Digital Economy Affairs.
At the event, the President emphasized the importance of collaboration among professionals to drive the country’s digital transformation, reaffirming a commitment to advancing this agenda as a national priority. Highlighting the potential of digitalization, it was noted that such efforts could enhance economic efficiency and propel the country’s economy to greater heights.
Key objectives outlined included eradicating poverty, transforming societal attitudes, and prioritizing digitalization. Reflecting on past practices, the President remarked that development should transcend mere construction projects, pointing to the need for reforms in focus areas like education and labor services, with digital solutions as a primary tool.
An ambitious goal was set to generate USD 15 billion in revenue through the digital economy within five years. Plans include expanding the digital workforce to 200,000 and implementing a comprehensive action plan for nationwide digital transformation within the same timeframe.
Engineer Eranga Weerarathna also assumed duties as the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Affairs during the ceremony.
The event was attended by Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President; Varuna Sri Dhanapala, Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy; Senior Presidential Advisor on Digital Affairs and Chairman of ICTA, Hans Wijayasuriya; and other officials.
