President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

 Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (16) at the Prime Minister's official residence in Hyderabad. The meeting facilitated the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) related to preventing double taxation and enhancing the powers of state officials between the two nations.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted India’s special place within Sri Lanka’s foreign policy and its strategic importance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Sri Lanka’s gesture of selecting India as the destination for the President’s first official foreign visit, emphasizing the shared vision for strengthening connections across physical, digital, and energy sectors.

Key topics of discussion included technical support for Sri Lanka, focusing on fortifying the electricity grid and developing multi-product petroleum pipelines. India also pledged support for future projects such as modernizing the signalling system on the Anuradhapura railway line and enhancing Kankesanthurai port.

Under educational cooperation, India will provide scholarships to 200 students in universities located in Jaffna and the Eastern Province, starting next year. Furthermore, training for 1,500 Sri Lankan government officials in India over the next five years was announced.

India and Sri Lanka will also collaborate on the development of agriculture, dairy farming, and fishing industries, alongside improvements in housing, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to ensuring that its territory is not used in ways detrimental to India's security and regional stability. Discussions under the Colombo Security Conclave framework focused on cooperation in maritime security, counterterrorism, cyber security, trafficking, organized crime, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance.

An invitation was extended to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Sri Lanka during the meeting.
