Human heart from the 3D printer

Researchers at Tel Aviv University managed to successfully print the first ever 3D heart that uses cells and biological materials from a patient. They have produced an entire heart, complete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers. But it was only as big as a cherry and comparable to the heart of a human fetus.

However, it is significantly smaller than a normal heart and not yet fully functional, as the head of the study in Tel Aviv said. The cells could not yet contract synchronously.

The process of creating the heart started with a biopsy of fatty tissue taken from patients. The cellular material from the tissues was used as the "ink" for the print job.
