Hambantota District is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, in the Southern Province.There are 240.1 km from Colombo to Hambantota. It has very dry climate. The district capital is Hambantota town; the administrative headquarters are located there as well as the center of salt production. Other prominent towns include Tangalle, Ambalantota, Tissamaharama, and Beliatta.An underdeveloped area that was hit hard by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it is currently undergoing a number of major development projects, including the construction of a new sea port, international airport and an international cricket stadium.
